Bertolt Brecht arrived in Los Angeles in 1941 while fleeing from the Nazis. The starting point for the film are notes for a movie he drafted after reading an article in Life Magazine entitled "A Model Family in a Model Home". The film explores Brecht's thoughts on workers and on the bourgeois home as a stage on which higher social and political constraints are realized.
