Brecht and his "epic theater" sometimes seem dusty, almost mummified to many. This is due to dry treatises in school textbooks and a scholarship that turns its subject matter into an anemic affair. It is easy to forget that Brecht was not only an astute author, but also a passionate theater maker who struggled with the ensemble during rehearsals to find the best form for his plays. This is illustrated by original recordings from the rehearsals for "Life of Galileo" from 1955/56, which Stephan Suschke sifted through or rather listened to: his impressive audio document shows Brecht at work - the last before his death at the Berliner Ensemble, in the midst of the creative process with his actors:
"Galilei: I believe in man, and I believe in his reason. Without this faith, I wouldn't have the strength to get out of bed in the morning.
Sagredo: Do you want me to tell you something? I don't believe in them. (quick-tempered:) Forty years among men have taught me
Brecht, in between: Take it easy! Now you're getting cold as ice. You say (coolly): I want to tell you something. I don't believe in them. You can say what you want. Very cold, very dismissive. That nonsense there, that modern nonsense!"

The literature program of the Brecht Festival was realized with the kind support of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts.
