Stephan Suschke is a director and acting director at the Landestheater Linz. As a close collaborator of Heiner Müller, he worked on many productions at the Deutsches Theater and the Berliner Ensemble, which he directed from 1997 to 1999. He does not believe that Brecht has become more topical these days: "The problem is rather that reality has caught up with Brecht's texts since the fall of the Wall. Brecht's texts are expansive, huge projection surfaces that need to be described. Everything he did was characterized by great flexibility and lightness of thought. What I always find great is his very precise, very materialistic view of people and relationships: How you live, you think! He despised the ideologies that today, in their various sectarian forms, are reminiscent of those of the 20th century. Exploitation is not a phenomenon of ethnicity or sexual orientation. This "old white man" was much more intelligent in that respect too: "Black, white, brown, / Yellow! End their butchery! / When the peoples themselves speak, they will soon be united"
