The format
Frippery is a really nice word. The three Augsburgers from Das Format agree and have done the only right thing - left it out. The result is something that has slowly but surely found its place in the mainstream in recent years: a simple but by no means shallow mix of noise, post-punk and indie. The format is riding the Neue Deutsche Welle revival, but on a bodyboard and with plenty of grit. Where Von Wegen Lisbeth incorporate a pun, Das Format add a scratchy guitar (which is more fun anyway), where Die Nerven walk barefoot through the shards, the three-headed band jump into the mosh pit. There's not much to hear from the newly formed trio yet - but that will change at the end of the year with their debut album. The first single, Panorama Restaurant, was released in March - a three-and-a-half-minute, upbeat, mid-tempo track with a bass riff that gets your head bobbing from the very first second, and by the time guitarist Bruno Tenschert's fantastically noisy cloud of distortion breaks over the song, there's only one thing you want to do: move. It smells of nerves, of Fontaines D.C., but certainly not of the mustiness of Neue Deutsche Welle. Alongside bands such as DasKitsch, Die Sauna and Raketenumschau, the format proves what Bavaria can do when it comes to German noiserock and post-punk. Word acrobatics are sought in vain in the first single - but the excitement here lies in the simplicity. Because it leaves room for interpretation. Because it's clearly about a lot: perhaps about missed opportunities, lost moments, the fear of leaving youth behind. Simple metaphors and very clear images that immediately appear in the mind's eye.
