Kai Windhövel came into contact with the theater as a youngster: in his home town of Beckum, he helped build up the municipal theater, where he played Beckmann in "Draußen vor der Tür" for several years. After training as an actor, he went on to permanent engagements at the theaters in Lübeck, Senftenberg, Rostock, Heilbronn and most recently at the Staatstheater Schwerin, where Kai Windhövel worked with Herbert Fritsch, Christoph Schroth, Sewan Latchinian, André Bücker, Alejandro Quintana and Markus Heinzelmann, among others.

Kai Windhövel has been a permanent ensemble member at the Staatstheater Augsburg since the 2017/18 season. Here he has performed in "Peer Gynt", "Martin Luther & Thomas Münzer oder Die Einführung der Buchhaltung", "Welt am Draht", "Fatzer", "Die nötige Folter", "Der Sturm" and "freiheit.pro", among others.
