Can Dündar
Can Dündar (born June 16, 1961 in Ankara) is a Turkish journalist, documentary filmmaker and author. The columnist and former editor-in-chief of the newspaper Cumhuriyet, who also works as a television presenter, was accused of espionage and arrested in 2015. On May 6, 2016, Dündar was found guilty of publishing state secrets. He was sentenced to five years and ten months in prison. Dündar lodged an appeal. On March 9, 2018, Turkey's highest court of appeal overturned the sentence as too lenient because he should also be charged with espionage.
On December 22, 2020, he was sentenced in absentia to 18 years and 9 months in prison for espionage and a further 8 years and 9 months for supporting terrorism. He was acquitted of the charge of making secret information public. The court ordered Dündar's arrest.[2] Dündar has been living and working in Germany since 2016. He is editor-in-chief of the web radio station ÖZGÜRÜZ ("We are free"), which is run by the non-profit research center Correctiv. Because he is considered a fugitive by Turkey, his assets, including his Istanbul apartment, his library and a house on the Mediterranean, have been confiscated.
